ABOUT US

Who we are
Volunteers are from all walks of life and no gardening knowledge is required.
A small planting team guide the planting each year and how to maintain it but equally important are those who are prepared to dig, prune, weed, pick up litter, remove plant waste, maintain equipment and water during dry spells.

There is a small committee that meets monthly.
We follow the RHS Britain In Bloom guidelines and enter the annual competition in the South West Small towns category. Our success over the years has seen us being invited to take part in the National competition. Some of our cups and accolades are on display in the foyer of the Town Council offices at Quay House.

We also support other community gardening projects around the town.

There is a separate RHS category called ‘Its Your Neighbourhood’ (IYNs) where a group of friends or neighbours take on a particular project and look after it. Examples are the Old Railway Bridge, WI boat, Boat Club boat, Lime Kiln, Church St. garden, Saffron Park garden.

What we do
Working parties are held weekly throughout the year on Wednesday mornings.
Volunteers are notified in advance of the location of the working party and what is to be done.
This may be a planting or tidying event. We work in small groups and is as much about the social activity as the gardening. Most activities involve the removal of green waste to the compound in the Recreation ground using our trollies.
Some larger donated tools and brushes are available in the garage by Quay house but most volunteers bring their own hand tools.

Funding has to be raisedĀ on an annual basis and comes from local businesses, individuals, monthly prize draw, and fund raising events. Larger projects may be funded from various grant sources.

Please see our lottery page for details about how we use the funding and how to enter our lottery.

All volunteers are required to wear a hi-vis jacket whilst working.
The working party normally ends with a welcome hot drink kindly donated by The Creek End Inn.

Social events are organisedĀ throughout the year such as quizzes, talks or visits.

Watering is an essential and crucial part of our work in the summer months and we rely on extra volunteers to join a weekly watering rota using our two battery powered bowsers.
Please look at our Watering page on how you can help us with this.
